Seventy Years of Educated Risk

"Last year Garryowen... marked 70 years of risk taking and breeding them tough."
— RM Williams Outback Magazine, May 2026

Every McInerney generation of our family has faced a choice.

Play it safe.

Or take an educated risk to build something better.

Seventy years ago, that meant establishing a Poll Hereford stud.

Over the decades, it meant improving genetics, expanding the business and adapting to changing seasons, markets and challenges.

In 2023, it meant taking another educated risk.

Instead of sending every animal through the traditional supply chain, often receiving less than it cost us to produce,  and questioning whether cattle farming even had a future for our family, we wrote a simple Facebook post inviting local families to buy beef directly from the farm.

Our hope wasn't just to sell beef.

It was to protect 70 years of breeding genetics, three generations of knowledge, and a way of farming we believe is worth preserving.

That one decision changed everything.

Today, Garryowen Direct Beef is the next chapter in our family's story, not because we wanted to become retailers, but because we believed there was a better way to connect the people raising the cattle with the people feeding their families.

At Garryowen, we're not just selling beef.

We're continuing a legacy of thoughtful decisions, hard work and the courage to keep evolving.

Because that's how family farms survive and that's how they stay in the family.

Seven Decades. One Family. Direct to You.

Garryowen Direct Beef isn't a startup.

It's the next chapter in a 70-year family farming legacy, bringing premium South Australian Hereford beef directly from our paddocks to your plate, with no middleman and no compromise on quality.

Our story is simple because our values are simple.

Why We Farm This Way

We believe the best beef comes from cattle raised the way nature intended, on healthy pastures, with time to grow and mature naturally.

We're not chasing commodity prices or industrial scale.

We're building a sustainable farming business that we hope one day our sixth generation will have the opportunity to continue.

That means making decisions others won't.

It means breeding our own Herefords.

It means carefully selecting every animal.

It means ageing our beef because quality is worth the extra time and cost.

And it means selling directly to the families who appreciate knowing exactly where their food comes from.

The Mince Story

In July 2026, we launched our Grass-Fed Bulk Mince.

Not because we needed another product.

Because our customers asked.

Families loved our quarter, half and whole beef packs but wanted the same premium quality in a more affordable option that required less freezer space.

So we listened.

Within 36 hours, the idea had become reality.

The first release sold before we'd even officially launched it.

No advertising agency.

No product development team.

No marketing budget.

Just a farming family listening to its customers.

That's what happens when you prioritise quality and stay close to the people you produce food for.

What This Means

Every quarter we prepare.

Every bag of mince we pack.

Every product we offer.

It all comes back to one simple principle:

We only sell beef we're proud to feed our own family.

We're not trying to become Australia's biggest beef business.

We're building one that our family is proud of.

One where farming stays in the family.

Where quality is never compromised.

Where every customer knows exactly where their beef comes from.

The Future

We're building for the long term.

Today, that's a direct-to-consumer beef business.

Tomorrow, we dream of a farm shop where families can connect even more closely with the people who produce their food.

We believe family farming doesn't have to compete on price.

It competes on trust.

On quality.

On relationships.

And on the resilience to keep taking educated risks when they matter most.
